In any emergency someone may be cut, burned or suffer other injuries. If you have these basic supplies in your first aid kit you are better prepared to help a family member, friend or someone that requires your urgent assistance (car accident, etc). Remember, many injuries are not life threatening and do not require immediate medical attention. Knowing how to treat minor injuries can make a difference in an emergency. Simply having the following things can help you stop bleeding, prevent infection and assist in decontamination.

Following is a list of items recommended by the Department of Homeland and Security for your first aid kit.

A First Aid Kit should include:

Two pairs of Latex, or other sterile gloves (if you are allergic to Latex). Sterile dressings to stop bleeding. Cleansing agent/soap and antibiotic towelettes to disinfect. Antibiotic ointment to prevent infection. Burn ointment to prevent infection. Adhesive bandages in a variety of sizes. Eye wash solution to flush the eyes or as general decontaminant. Thermometer Prescription medications you take every day such as insulin, heart medicine and asthma inhalers. You should periodically rotate medicines to account for expiration dates.

First Aid Manual List of emergency telephone numbers. Of course it's best to have all items from both lists but having something is better then nothing. So make sure you put together a first aid kit for your home, vehicle and workplace.

Following are some tips to keep in mind regarding the First Aid Kit.

The first aid kit should be kept in a clearly marked bag or container in an easily accessible location. Homes, vehicles and work places should all have a first aid kit. The size and nature of the first aid kit should be in proportion to the distance from help. Keep in mind a workplace with heavy machinery will require different first aid supplies than an office. Store the first aid kit in a place that is out of children's reach but easily accessible for adults. Check the first aid kit regularly. Replace the missing items or medicines that may have expired. Once you’ve stocked your kit, make sure to read the entire first-aid manual ahead of time, so you'll understand how to use the contents of your kits. (If your children are old enough to understand, review with them as well.) Tape a list of emergency phone numbers as well as all items in the kit on the outside or inside the lid, so you know what’s there and what needs to be replaced.
